What is Resource Guarding?
Resource Guarding is an aggressive behavior shown when you or others try to approach something your dog finds valuable.
This can be a mild behavior, such as growling, moving away with the item, or blocking the item with their body. However, this behavior can also be severe and end in full-blown aggression, possibly ending in your dog biting someone that tries to come near the whatever they are guarding.
Commonly this behavior comes from a combination of past experiences, instinct and different environmental factors that can lead your dog to feel threatened.
How are we going to fix this behavior?
We’ll begin by introducing that someone coming toward them is a positive thing. We want them to learn that guarding is unnecessary and that you coming toward them while they have an item will result in something even better for them. Often times beginning with teaching your dog to “trade” or bringing them a higher value item is a great place to start! From there we’ll work together to stop this behavior altogether.
